Rabobank riders dominated the Dutch National Road Championships in Kerkrade, winning seven medals including a national title for Rabobank Women’s Team rider Annemike van Vleuten. In the elite men’s competition, Lars Boom led the way with two silver medals, one in the road race and one in the time trial.
Van Vleuten won her first elite national championship by beating defending Dutch Road National Champion and Rabobank teammate Marianne Vos in the 114.4km elite women’s road race.
Racing 11 laps on a hilly course, can Vleuten and Vos escaped off the front on their Giant TCR Advanced SL team bikes. Van Vleuten, who missed some of last season recovering from a surgery, had the most power in the end, outsprinting Vos to take the win. Their Rabobank teammate Sanne van Paassen finished fifth.
Van Vleuten also scored a medal in the elite women’s time trial, riding her Trinity Advanced SL to second place behind Ellen van Dijk. Van Vleuten’s teammate Iris Slappendel finished third.
The men’s road race saw heavy rainstorms resulting in multiple crashes and less than 20 finishers. Boom persevered to finish second on his TCR Advanced SL. His teammate Robert Gesink finished sixth. Rabobank riders also showed well in the men’s TT with Boom, Clement and Tjallingii finishing second, fourth and fifth respectively.
In other National Championship races around Europe, Spanish Rabobank rider Luis Leon Sanchez won his fourth national championship in the time trial and women’s team rider Pauline Ferrand Prevot won the French time trial championship. Both rode the Trinity Advanced SL to capture the titles.
